FAQs

Do I need CyberSmart Active Protect (CAP) Desktop to use patching?

Yes. Patching is available for any desktop, laptop or server running the latest version of Active Protect Desktop.

Will users receive notifications when a patch is available?

Only admins can view and manage patchable software via the ‘Software’ page in the CyberSmart web application.
End users do not receive notifications when patches become available.
However, if an application is open when a patch is ready, the user will see a prompt to either: Close the application to apply the patch immediately, or Postpone the update.
If the application is already closed, the patch is installed silently in the background, with no user action needed.

Can I schedule patching for my organisation?

Yes. CyberSmart Patch supports both Automatic and Scheduled patching.

  • Automatic patching checks for and deploys available software updates daily.

  • Scheduled patching allows you to choose the day and time that patching runs across your organisation.

  • You can also choose to automatically include newly supported applications in your patching policy as they are added to the CyberSmart software catalogue.

Automatic and Scheduled Patching can be configured from the Software page by selecting Automatic patching.

Can I track patching progress?

Yes. The Software page provides visibility of patch status, deployment history and pending updates at both the device and organisation level.

What software can I patch?

You can patch:

  • 300+ applications on Windows

  • 50+ applications on macOS

These include popular tools from:

  • Microsoft

  • Adobe

  • Mozilla

  • Slack

  • Citrix
…and more. New apps are added regularly. Visit our website to stay informed about the latest updates to our patchable software.

How does patching work for end users?

If an application is closed, the patch installs automatically in the background according to your organisation’s patching configuration.

If the application is open, the user will see a prompt to either: Close the application now to allow the patch to install, or Postpone the update until later.

For Apple MacOS - Full Disk Access needs to be enabled. Instructions can be found here.

I already use CyberSmart Vulnerability Manager - why do I need Patch?

CSVM helps identify vulnerabilities, but does not remediate them. Patch ensures security gaps are actively closed and any remediations will appear within 24 hours in CSVM.

Is patching necessary if I have endpoint security?

Yes, antivirus/malware protection prevents exploitation, but patching eliminates the vulnerabilities at source.
